I know you are, but what am I?

Bullies.  Not a fan.  No, sir — don’t got a bit of use for ‘em.  As a mother who watched both of her kids go through junior high, I have to say it seems as though that middle school/ junior high is where most bullies are hiding.  In plain sight.  In huddled packs in the quad and against hall walls.  There are a lot of theories about what goes into the creation of a bully.  One of my favorites involves […]

Total recall. Not.

There is some information that I’m weirdly wired to remember forever.  Obscure information that will probably never serve me well, such as medications to treat several types of ventricular tachycardia like amioderone, propafenone, etc. (I am not a doctor nor have I ever played one on TV); how and why Henirich Heine coined the term Lisztmania long before the Beatles came along; and how the magical author/illustrator Tasha Tudor believed that Corgis were enchanted (“You need only to see them […]

“He does not weep who does not see.”

Victor Hugo wrote those words about one without compassion.  To me, the flip side of that coin is the one who sees or hears too much and cannot help but weep copious tears. Ah, ha, ha, ha – Stayin’ Alive.

Life deserves a soundtrack.  There are so many occasions that come along in life that really cry out for a thunderous John Williams (Star Wars, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark) underscoring or Thomas Newman’s (Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, WALL-E) haunting melodies.  Contemporary music also works for the workplace, comedic family moments or time spent with friends.  Music just makes everything that much better.   I never set out for my life to be set to a country soundtrack, but […]

SWF seeks ???

Describe yourself and who you’re looking for in 2,000 words or less.  This is the criteria set forth when a well-meaning friend encourages you to toss your hat, or more appropriately pen, into an on-line dating pool.  Being a woman of words, I thought I was up to this challenge… but I’m at a loss for words.   Aw, not really.  That’s a lie.   The problem is more along the lines of having too many words rattling around in […]

Wobble, maybe – but I’m too scrappy to fall down.

No matter how hard life tries to knock me over or pin me, I refuse to “tap out” and give up.  Over the years, it has been this quality (along with being petite, I suppose) that has earned me the title of: Scrappy.  Having once told a portion of my life’s tale to a woman caught in the web of the storytelling, she sighed and said, “My, gosh!  What a scrapper.  You’re your own week of Oprah!”  Yeah.  I get […]
