Be someone I want to respect.

I am not a big fan of rude, despite the fact that some days, it seems that rude people rule the world. At some point, I thought maybe it would stop. Surely, kindness, consideration and an overall sense of justice would kick in and some kind of decency equilibrium would be restored. Oh, silly me. Apparently, even the mentors of the world are allowed to slap on a jersey and ball cap and coach folks into leading their lives backsides […]

Mean Girls = Mean Women

The other night, a woman I know leaned in, quite conspiratorially, and all but “Pssst!” in my ear as she asked a question that could only be identified as bait. Slimy and smelling of fish, it was a question I knew she already had the answer to, yet with eyebrows raised, she asked me to provide her with sensitive information about another woman in our circle of acquaintances. When I turned away from her unappetizing hook, she shrugged and went […]

Blame / Psychological Projection: Or…“Excuse me, does your opinion make my butt look big?”

The other night I watched a woman trip over her own two feet, then turn to what I assume was her beleaguered boyfriend (know that I only questioned the boyfriend part) and loudly blamed him for her misstep.  J’accuse!  He weakly smiled and said, “Oh, I’m sorry.”  Poor Sir Schmoe, you do know it wasn’t your fault?  I’m sure he thinks it was noble of him to take the blame, but I wanted to sidle up and tell him it […]

I know you are, but what am I?

Bullies.  Not a fan.  No, sir — don’t got a bit of use for ‘em.  As a mother who watched both of her kids go through junior high, I have to say it seems as though that middle school/ junior high is where most bullies are hiding.  In plain sight.  In huddled packs in the quad and against hall walls.  There are a lot of theories about what goes into the creation of a bully.  One of my favorites involves […]

Ideas, events and people

This past weekend I held my Annual Music Tea where my students get the opportunity to perform for one another.  Moms, Dads and Grandparents (and the like) are allowed to come, but the event is really for the kids.  Those who have been working with me for awhile inspire the beginners and the newbies (the youngest is 5) give the old-timers (the oldest being 20) a chance to see how far they’ve come.   It is always fun for me […]
